If you are located in an Energy Community, get an additional 10% tax Credit bonus in addition to the standard 30% + MARCS depreciation.
The Energy Communities Tax Credit Bonus is an additional 10% adder and applies to businesses, organizations, and non-profits that otherwise qualify for the tax credit. Locations qualify as “Energy Communities,” are areas that have been affected by the changing national energy landscape – coal closures, decreased labor force, and other economic impacts as the nation has seen a decline in fossil fuel use. Highlighted communities are eligible for a 10% bonus on top of the standard 30% Federal ITC for solar.
Recent changes to the PJM power grid — driven by rising energy demand, aging plant retirements, and new reliability rules — sent capacity prices skyrocketing from ~$29 to $270 per MW-day after the 2025 auction. That’s an 800% increase likely to raise electricity costs across the board.
Even businesses with long-term CRES contracts may see rate hikes if their agreement includes a regulatory change clause. And this may be just the beginning — the next PJM auction in December 2025 could push rates even higher for 2026.
The tax credit currently allows businesses and non-profits to claim 30%+ of solar project costs as a federal tax credit. But as it steps down, the schedule includes several key deadlines.
